Renewing your New York certification
One telehealth visit and you're covered again — no application, no state fee, nothing to wait for. The only thing to watch is a date you have to go and look up.
First: find your expiration date
It's printed on your certification — the same document you show at the dispensary. New York practitioners set the certification period themselves and can make it shorter where that's clinically appropriate, so don't work from an assumption about how long yours runs.
If you can't find the document, your dispensary can tell you when they look you up, and we can check when we certified you.
Renewing here is as short as it gets
No state application, no fee to the Office of Cannabis Management, no approval to wait through. Your practitioner issues the renewal, your registration carries on, and you're covered again — the same automatic arrangement as your first certification.

Book your renewal visit
Telehealth again, $75 for returning patients. There's no state processing behind this, so you don't need weeks of lead time — but book before the date rather than after, since an expired certification means no medical purchases until a new one is issued.
A few weeks ahead is comfortable. If you have a caregiver, read the section below before you book.
Your practitioner renews the certification
Your practitioner reviews how the past period has gone and issues the renewal. Nothing for you to file, and no fee to the state.
Save the new document and replace the old one on your phone. Patients who keep a screenshot of the previous certification sometimes show that out of habit, which is an avoidable wasted trip to the dispensary.
If you have a caregiver, this part matters
New York treats an extended certification differently from a brand new one, and it affects whether your caregiver has to do anything.
Your caregiver does nothing
If your existing certification is extended and they've been your designated caregiver for a while, their registration is extended along with it.
No re-registration, no new paperwork.
Your caregiver must re-register
If you receive a new certification rather than an extension, your caregiver has to register again with the OCM before they can purchase for you.
Worth them doing promptly rather than discovering it at the counter.
⚠️ Ask which one you've received
From the patient's side the two look much the same — you end up with a valid certification either way. The difference only shows up when your caregiver tries to collect and finds their registration no longer matches.
So if someone collects on your behalf, ask at your renewal visit whether you've been extended or newly certified, and pass that on to them. It's a thirty-second conversation that prevents a genuinely annoying one.

How do I find my expiration date?▾
It's on your certification document — the one you show at the dispensary. Since New York doesn't issue cards, that document is the only place it appears on your side. Your dispensary can also tell you when they scan you in, and we can check if we issued it.
How early should I renew?▾
A few weeks before expiry is plenty — there's no state queue to allow for. The important thing is doing it before the date rather than after, because access stops the moment the certification lapses.
What if it's already expired?▾
Not a problem to fix. There's no registration to fall out of in New York and no reinstatement process — a new certification restores you the same day. You just couldn't purchase as a medical patient in the gap.
Do I need to tell the state I've renewed?▾
No. Your practitioner enters it and your registration follows automatically, exactly as it did the first time. There's nothing for you to submit and no fee to pay.
Can I switch to you from another practitioner?▾
Yes, and it's painless in New York — there's no registry to transfer and nothing to notify. Any OCM-registered practitioner can issue your next certification. Book the renewal and mention you're coming from elsewhere.
Why is renewal cheaper than my first visit?▾
Because there's less to establish. Your history is known and the conversation is about how the past period has gone rather than building the picture from scratch. The certification itself is identical in effect.
Is it still worth renewing with adult-use available?▾
For regular buyers, comfortably. Medical purchases are exempt from New York's cannabis taxes while adult-use carries 13% at the register, so the saving covers $75 quickly. Patients also keep larger allowances, access from 18, and medical-only product lines.
My caregiver was turned away. What went wrong?▾
Most likely you received a new certification rather than an extension, which means they need to re-register with the OCM before collecting for you again. They'll need their photo ID, a copy of your current certification, and their registry ID at the dispensary. The OCM can be reached at medical@ocm.ny.gov or 1-888-626-5151.
