Optional state registration: Maine offers an optional state-issued patient ID card, but it's not required for dispensary access. Most patients skip it. The Maine state does not charge for the application either.

Do I need a state ID card?
No. Maine is one of the only states where patient registration is OPTIONAL. Your written certification is your medical cannabis credential. Bring it to any licensed Maine dispensary or caregiver retail store along with your government-issued ID.
Does Maine have qualifying conditions?
No. Maine removed all qualifying conditions in 2018. Your Maine-registered practitioner determines if cannabis may help your condition.
How long is my certification valid?
One year from issuance. Annual renewal required.
What if I miss the call?
Your practitioner will try again and may text. Calls sometimes show as "Unknown" or "Spam Risk."
Can I use my Maine certification in other states?
Some states have reciprocity that may recognize Maine certifications for visiting medical patients. Maine itself is unusually welcoming — visiting medical patients from other states can purchase from Maine dispensaries with their valid out-of-state cards.
