How the Virginia Program Works

  1. You must be a permanent or temporary Virginia resident and at least 18 years old. (Minors qualify with a parent/guardian caregiver.)
  2. Schedule a telemedicine appointment with a Virginia-licensed practitioner registered with the CCA.
  3. Virginia does not have a list of qualifying conditions. Your practitioner determines if cannabis may benefit your condition (common examples: chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, epilepsy, cancer).
  4. If approved, you receive a written certification (digital or physical). It’s valid for up to one year and must be renewed annually.
  5. With a valid certification, you can visit any licensed Virginia dispensary to purchase medical cannabis products.

Bring to dispensaries: your unexpired certification (digital or printed), a valid government-issued ID, and proof of Virginia residency (if not shown on ID).

Optional State Registration

Registration with the CCA is not required to purchase in-state. However, you may optionally register via the Virginia Medical Cannabis Patient Portal for a state-issued MMJ card (fee: $50). This can help with reciprocity in other states.
