Renewing your Virginia written certification
One telehealth visit and a fresh certification — no state application, no processing wait. The only real risk is not knowing when yours expires.
Check your expiration date — don't assume a year
Virginia practitioners decide how long a certification lasts, up to a maximum of one year, and can set it shorter. Yours may not run the full twelve months. The date is on your certification.
Renewing here is simpler than almost anywhere
There's no state renewal application, no fee to the Cannabis Control Authority, and no approval queue. Your practitioner writes a new certification, a new digital validation is generated, and you're covered again.
In practical terms, renewal in Virginia is the same appointment you had the first time — just cheaper. Everything that made the initial process quick applies again.

Find your expiration date and book
It's printed on your written certification, and it's also on the digital validation you show at the dispensary. If you can't find either, we can look up when we certified you.
Because there's no state processing involved, you don't need weeks of lead time — but book before the date rather than after. An expired certification means no purchases until a new one is written.
Telehealth with a Virginia practitioner
$75 for returning patients. Your practitioner reviews how the past year has gone — what's working, what isn't, whether anything's changed — and writes a new certification.
Two things worth raising while you're there: if you want a registered agent added or changed, this is the easy moment to do it, and any change to your address or contact details should be mentioned so the new certification is accurate.
Use your new digital validation
A new Certification Identification Card is generated when the certification is written. Save the new one to your phone and delete or replace the old copy — the dispensary checks the current one, and an out-of-date screenshot is an avoidable wasted trip.
⚠️ Renewal is your best chance to fix a registered agent
If someone needs to be able to collect medicine for you, having them named on the new certification means no state registration and no fee. If you left it off last time and they've since had to register with the CCA — or you gave up on the idea — renewal resets that.

I can't find my expiration date. How do I check?▾
It's on your written certification and on the digital validation you show at the dispensary. Your dispensary can also tell you when they scan you in. Failing all that, call us — if we issued your certification we can tell you when it was written and how long it runs.
How early can I renew?▾
There's no state-imposed window the way other states have, since there's no state application involved. A couple of weeks before expiry is plenty. What matters is renewing before the date rather than after, because access stops the moment your certification lapses.
What if it already expired?▾
Nothing is lost — Virginia has no registration to fall out of, so there's no reinstatement to go through. Book a visit, get a new certification written, and you're back the same day. You just can't purchase in the gap between expiry and the new certification.
Why is renewal cheaper than my first visit?▾
Because there's less to establish. Your history is known, and the conversation is about how the past year has gone rather than building the picture from scratch. The certification itself is identical in effect.
Can I switch to you from another practitioner?▾
Yes, and Virginia makes it painless — there's no registry to transfer and no state notification needed. Any Virginia practitioner with a CCA portal account can write your certification. Whoever wrote your current one has no bearing on who writes the next.
Do I need my old certification at the visit?▾
It's useful to have to hand, mainly so you know your expiry date and what was on it — including any registered agent. But a new certification is written fresh rather than amended, so nothing depends on producing the old one.
Does my dispensary need to know I renewed?▾
They'll see the new validation when you present it. The thing to watch is your own phone — patients who saved the old validation as a screenshot sometimes show that by habit. Replace it with the new one as soon as it's issued.
