Becoming a Virginia medical cannabis patient
Virginia is the simplest state we work in. One telehealth visit, no state application, no waiting — you can often shop the same day.
There's no card, and no registration
Virginia dropped its patient registration requirement in July 2022. You don't apply to the state, you don't pay a state fee, and you don't wait for anything in the mail. Your written certification is your access.
So what do I actually show at the dispensary?
When your practitioner completes your written certification in the Cannabis Control Authority portal, it generates a digital Certification Identification Card — sometimes called a Validation of Written Certification. That's what you present, along with a valid government-issued photo ID.
You can keep it on your phone or print it. Either works. That combination — the digital validation plus your ID — is all a Virginia dispensary needs.
Virginia has no list of qualifying conditions
Most states publish a fixed list and you have to match one of them. Virginia doesn't. The decision is left to the certifying practitioner's clinical judgement — if they believe cannabis may help your condition, they can certify you.
In practice that makes Virginia one of the more accessible programs in the country. It also means the honest answer to "do I qualify?" is that it's a conversation with the practitioner rather than a checklist you can look up in advance.
The three steps
There's no state processing in the middle, which is why this moves fast.
Book your telehealth visit
Pick a time and complete the intake form. Telemedicine is permitted in Virginia, so this is by phone or video — no office visit.
You'll need to be a Virginia resident and able to show it. Have your ID and proof of residency ready, plus a working email address and phone number, since those go on the certification itself.
Your practitioner issues the written certification
If they judge you a good candidate, they complete the written certification in the CCA portal. They also decide how long it's valid for — up to one year, though they can set a shorter expiration — and may include usage recommendations.
Speak up now if you'll need help getting to a dispensary. Your practitioner can add a registered agent to the certification at this point, which is far simpler than arranging it afterward. More on that below.
Go to a dispensary
Bring your digital Certification Identification Card and your photo ID. That's it — there's no approval step to wait for, no fee to pay the state, and nothing to activate.
Virginia patients can purchase up to a 90-day supply, and the state's dispensaries are the licensed pharmaceutical processors.
⚠️ Mention a registered agent at your visit, not after
If someone else may need to collect your medicine for you, they can be named directly on your written certification — and if they are, they don't need to register with the state at all.

When does my card arrive?▾
It doesn't, and you don't need one. Virginia stopped requiring patient registration in July 2022 — your written certification and the digital validation that comes with it are what give you access. If you're waiting on an envelope, nothing is coming, and nothing is wrong.
Should I register with the CCA anyway?▾
For most patients there's no reason to. Optional registration exists and carries a state fee, but it doesn't give you anything you don't already have with your certification. The people who genuinely do need to register are registered agents and some parents or guardians who weren't named on the certification.
Do I need a specific diagnosis to qualify?▾
No. Virginia doesn't publish a list of qualifying conditions — it's left to the practitioner's judgement about whether cannabis may help you. Bring what you have about your condition and let the conversation happen; there's no box you need to tick beforehand.
How long does my certification last?▾
Up to one year, but your practitioner decides and may set it shorter. Don't assume twelve months — check the expiration on your certification when you receive it and note the date. Here's how renewal works.
Can my regular doctor certify me?▾
Possibly. Virginia allows physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice registered nurses to certify, and practitioners no longer need annual state registration — but they do need a CCA portal account to access the certification form. Many practitioners haven't set one up. Worth asking yours, and we're here if the answer is no.
Can someone else pick up for me?▾
Yes, through a registered agent. The easy path is naming them on your certification at the time it's written — then they need no separate registration. If they're added later, they must register with the CCA first. Full details here.
Do you certify patients under 18 in Virginia?▾
No — our Virginia practice is adults only, 18 and over. Virginia's program does allow minor patients, with a parent or legal guardian named on the certification to collect on their behalf. If you're seeking care for a child, you'd need a Virginia practice that handles minors.
Does my out-of-state card work in Virginia?▾
No. Virginia doesn't recognize other states' medical cards — you'd need a Virginia written certification from a Virginia practitioner. The good news is that's a single telehealth visit with no state application behind it, so it's among the quickest programs to join.
