Becoming a Minnesota medical cannabis patient
Five steps, one telehealth visit, and a three-year enrollment. Here's exactly what happens and what you need to have ready.
Minnesota doesn't issue a card
There's no physical card in this program. Once the state approves your enrollment, you're in the Medical Cannabis Registry, and the dispensary looks you up by name. If you ever need proof of participation — for an employer, for example — log in to your registry account and print the Registry Verification Document from the Quick Links area of your home page.
Your certification is also good for three years, so there's no annual renewal visit the way there is in most states.
The five steps
Start to finish this usually takes three to six weeks, most of it waiting on the state.
Book your telehealth visit
Pick a time that works for you and complete the intake form. You'll speak with a Minnesota-licensed provider by phone or video — nothing in person.
Before your visit, sort out your email address. The state sends your enrollment link to whatever address your provider enters, and each registry account has to have its own address. Use a personal account you can get into easily, not a work email.
Your provider certifies you in the registry
If you have a qualifying condition, your provider files your certification directly in Minnesota's Medical Cannabis Registry during or right after the visit. You don't have to submit anything yourself at this stage.
Shortly after, the state's Division of Medical Cannabis emails you a confirmation and a unique enrollment link. Check spam and junk if you don't see it — that link is the only way forward, and it's specific to you.
Enroll with the state
Follow the link in that email and fill out your enrollment application. Have these ready:
- Your Minnesota driver's license or state ID card
- A phone to photograph it
- If you're adding a parent, legal guardian, or spouse to your account: their photo ID plus your birth certificate, guardianship paperwork, or marriage certificate
This is also where you can add a caregiver, parent/legal guardian, or spouse who can manage your account or pick up your medicine. It's optional for adults and required for minors — and a caregiver needs a separate email address from yours.
The state reviews and approves it
Applications are processed in the order they arrive and can take up to 30 days. You'll get an email when yours is approved, or a request for more documents if something's missing. Once approved, you're enrolled for three years, and the approval email tells you your exact expiration date.
Self-evaluation, then your dispensary appointment
Log in to your registry account and complete the Patient Self-Evaluation (PSE). It's required before your first purchase. Then call or book online with the medical cannabis dispensary of your choice — the state doesn't schedule this for you.
Your first visit includes a required consultation with a pharmacist or certified medical cannabis consultant, who recommends products and dosing.
Bring with you:
- Your photo ID (a caregiver picking up brings theirs)
- A list of your current prescribed medications
- The visit summary from your certification appointment
- Payment — insurance doesn't cover medical cannabis
⏳ Watch the 90-day clock
This is the one thing that trips people up. A Minnesota certification is only good for 90 days, and your enrollment has to be submitted and approved inside that window — not just submitted.
- Because review alone can take 30 days, finish your enrollment within the first 60 days.
- If the 90 days run out before approval, your certification expires and you'll need a new certification visit before you can try again.
- You'll get another 90-day window after recertification.

Do I get a medical cannabis card in Minnesota?▾
No. Minnesota's program doesn't issue cards. Once you're approved you're in the state registry and the dispensary pulls you up there. For proof of participation, log in to your registry account and print the Registry Verification Document under Quick Links.
How long does the whole process take?▾
Your certification happens the day of your visit. After that, enrollment is on your schedule, and state review takes up to 30 days. Most patients are approved within three to six weeks of their appointment if they enroll promptly.
Do I have to renew every year?▾
No. Minnesota enrollment runs three years. You can start re-enrolling as early as 90 days before your expiration date, and you'll need a new certification visit at that point. See re-enrolling with the state.
I never got the enrollment email from the state.▾
Check your spam and junk folders first — it's the most common cause. If it still isn't there, the address on file may be wrong or already tied to another registry account, since every account needs its own unique email. Get in touch with us and we'll help sort it out before your 90 days run down.
Is there a state fee to enroll?▾
The state's enrollment application doesn't collect a payment. Your costs are the $149 certification visit and then your medicine at the dispensary, which insurance does not cover.
How often do I have to do the self-evaluation?▾
Once before your first purchase, then quarterly through your first year, counted from that first purchase date. After a year, no more are required unless the state notifies you that a new one is available — and if it does, complete it before your next pickup. More on the self-evaluation.
Can I buy smokable flower?▾
Registered patients and caregivers aged 21 and over can. You'll need proof of age at pickup.
I'm a veteran — is there a shortcut?▾
Minnesota lets veterans self-certify with a separate state form instead of getting a practitioner certification, using a veteran ID card and an attestation of a qualifying condition. If you'd rather have a provider handle it and give you a clinical visit summary for your dispensary appointment, our normal process works exactly the same for you.
Can my medicine cross state lines?▾
No. Minnesota's protections stop at the state border, and federal law prohibits carrying cannabis between states even where it's legal. Buy only from Minnesota-licensed medical dispensaries, and keep your medicine in its original labeled packaging.
