Renewing your Michigan medical marijuana card
Every two years: a new certification, then a renewal in the CRA portal. There's one step in that portal that decides whether you're renewing or accidentally starting over.
⚠️ Link to your existing record first
Michigan's portal doesn't automatically know who you are. If you create an account and go straight into an application, you're filing as a brand-new patient — not renewing. The renewal path only appears once your account is connected to your existing MMMP record.
New account → straight to an application
Files you as a new patient, with your existing registration ignored.

Follow the state's linking instructions before starting anything else.
You'll need details from your current registration to link successfully. If your card is to hand, keep it in front of you — and if the linking step won't accept your details, call us before you try to work around it by starting fresh.
Two things, in this order
A new certification — from a Michigan-licensed physician. That's us, and it's $89 for returning patients by telehealth.
The renewal application — filed by you through the CRA online portal, with the $40 state fee. Your certification has to be dated within six months of when the state receives that application, so get certified first and file promptly after.
How to renew
Michigan accepts renewals within 90 days of your expiration date.
Find your expiration date, then book
Your expiration date is printed on your registry card. Michigan cards run two years, which is long enough that most people have genuinely lost track — dig the card out and check before you assume you have time.
Renewals are accepted within 90 days of expiry. Book your recertification early in that window rather than late; the state's processing takes a couple of weeks on top of your appointment.
Get recertified
Telehealth with a Michigan-licensed physician, $89 for returning patients. Your physician reviews how things have gone over the past two years and completes a new certification.
Bring your current medication list. Two years is long enough for a lot to change, and that's the conversation worth having.
Log in, link your record, then renew
Go to the CRA online portal. If you don't already have an online account, create one and follow the instructions to link to your existing record before anything else. Then choose the renewal option rather than a new application.
Update your name or address if either has changed, and pay the $40 renewal fee. Remember the six-month rule — your certification has to still be current when the state receives this.
Approval, then your new card in the mail
Online applicants get the decision by email, and Michigan mails a new physical card. Watch for the envelope — and when it arrives, write the new expiration date somewhere you'll find it in two years' time.
⚠️ If you have a caregiver, you can't renew online
Michigan's online system is only open to patients renewing without a caregiver — or to patients willing to remove their caregiver as part of the renewal. If you want to keep your caregiver, you'll need to renew using the paper application packet by mail instead, with the extra $25 caregiver fee.
Mail takes longer than 15 business days, so if that's your situation, start earlier in the 90-day window than you otherwise would.

The portal is treating me like a new patient. What did I do wrong?▾
Almost certainly the linking step. A fresh online account isn't connected to your existing MMMP registration until you follow the state's instructions to link to your existing record — without that, the system only offers you a new patient application. Back out and link first. If you've already submitted something, call us before filing anything else.
How early can I renew?▾
Within 90 days of your expiration date. Aim for the early part of that window — between the appointment, the application, and around 15 business days of state processing, a renewal started in the last fortnight is uncomfortably tight.
What happens if my card expires first?▾
You lose your medical status until the new card is issued, which means paying full adult-use prices and taxes in the meantime if you're 21 or over — and no legal access at all if you're under 21. You don't lose your place in the program, but the gap costs you real money now that the tax difference is so large.
Do I need a new certification, or does my old one carry over?▾
You need a new one. Michigan requires the certification supporting your renewal to be dated within six months of the state receiving the application, so a two-year-old certification is nowhere near current. The visit comes first, then the application.
Can I switch to a different doctor at renewal?▾
Yes. Any Michigan-licensed physician can certify you — you're not tied to whoever did it two years ago. If you're coming to us from another practice, just book the renewal and mention it when we speak.
Can I add or remove a caregiver at renewal?▾
Renewal is the natural moment to change this, but it determines which route you take. Removing a caregiver lets you renew online. Keeping or adding one means the paper packet by mail and the extra $25. Decide before you start rather than partway through.
My card expired a while ago. Am I renewing or reapplying?▾
If you're outside the 90-day renewal window you may be filing as a new application rather than a renewal, depending on how long it's been. Either way you need a current certification first, so the visit is the same. Call us and we'll work out which route applies before you pay a state fee for the wrong one.
Is it still worth renewing now that adult-use is legal?▾
More than it used to be. Since January 2026, adult-use carries a 24% wholesale tax on top of the 10% excise and 6% sales tax, and medical patients pay only the 6%. At roughly $65 a year all-in, a regular buyer recovers that in tax savings quickly — and patients keep the 12-plant cultivation allowance and access from age 18 that adult-use doesn't offer.
