Understanding the
Patient Card Process
Patients often come to you with card questions. Learn common issues, how to respond helpfully, and where to direct them for support.
Here's the standard patient card process from start to finish:
Get Certified
Patient is certified by a licensed medical cannabis provider.
Register with the State
Patient registers (or renews) through their state's MMJ portal.
Pay the State Fee
Patient completes the required annual state transaction/payment.
Card Is Mailed
Once certification + payment are both on file, the state prints and mails the card.
You don't need to troubleshoot the state portal — but understanding this flow helps you answer questions confidently and point patients in the right direction.
A patient's card is only sent after both conditions are met:
- A new doctor certification has been submitted to the state
- The state fee is up to date (paid in full)
If either one is missing — no card gets mailed. This is the most common reason patients are waiting and confused.
Here are the situations you'll hear most often — and how to handle them:
The first thing any patient should check after logging in is their mailing address. Incorrect addresses are the #1 reason cards are lost or delayed.
