How Cannabis May Help
For breast cancer patients, medical cannabis is most often used to help manage:
- Treatment-related nausea and vomiting
- Chronic and neuropathic pain
- Anxiety and emotional distress
- Appetite loss
- Sleep difficulty and insomnia
- Fatigue and low energy
Cannabis is not a cure for cancer and is not a replacement for oncology care. It is used alongside your existing treatment plan, with your care team's awareness, to help with symptom management and quality of life.
What to Have Ready
- Valid WV driver's license or state ID showing your current West Virginia address.
- Proof of residency if your ID address is outdated — a utility bill, voter card, or similar document works.
- A passport-style photo for the state application (you can take this on your phone).
- Medical records related to your breast cancer diagnosis, if available. Helpful but not always required.
- A quiet, private location for the phone or video call. Please do not drive during your appointment.
- If renewing: have your existing patient ID or card number ready.
Ready When You Are
Pick a time that works for you. We'll handle the rest — gently, and at your pace.
Schedule My AppointmentFrequently Asked Questions
Is the appointment really by telemedicine?
Yes. Your certification visit happens by phone or secure video from anywhere in West Virginia. You don't need to travel, which matters when you're already managing treatment appointments.
Do I need to share medical records?
Records related to your breast cancer diagnosis are helpful and can shorten your visit, but they aren't always required. The certifying physician will discuss your situation during the appointment.
How long until I receive my card?
After your certification, you'll complete state registration and submit payment to the WV Office of Medical Cannabis. Card processing times vary, and the OMC will mail your patient card once approved.
Will my oncologist know I'm using medical cannabis?
We strongly encourage open communication with your oncology team. Cannabis can interact with certain treatments and medications, and your care team should be aware so they can support you safely. We can provide documentation to share with your providers if helpful.
What if I'm renewing my card?
Renewals are $75 and follow the same telemedicine process. Have your existing patient ID and card information ready. We recommend renewing 30–60 days before your card expires to avoid any gap.
Are financial hardship waivers available?
The West Virginia Office of Medical Cannabis offers financial hardship waivers for state registration fees for patients who qualify. We can point you to the application during your registration step.
Does insurance cover any of this?
Medical cannabis certifications are not covered by insurance. Our pricing is flat: $125 for new patients, $75 for renewals.
Want to Talk with a Pharmacist?
Many of our patients also book a separate pharmacist consultation to discuss product selection, dosing, and how cannabis may interact with their current cancer treatments and medications.
