Renewing your West Virginia medical cannabis card
Once a year: a new certification from us, then a renewal application on MyComplia. There's one button on the portal that sends people down the wrong path — start here so you don't hit it.
⚠️ Don't click "Create New Application"
This is the single most common renewal mistake, and it costs people weeks. On MyComplia, the big obvious button starts a brand new patient application — as if you'd never registered. It won't renew anything, and the state will eventually kick it back.

Find your existing certificate in your account, and use the menu next to it.
A dropdown appears with the Renew option. That's the one.
The renewal option lives on your existing record, not on the main application menu. If you're hunting for it and only seeing "new application," you're looking in the wrong place — scroll to your current certificate and check the menu beside it.
Two things renew, and both have to happen
Your physician certification — good for one year, and it's what we handle. A registered West Virginia physician has to certify you again.
Your state card — also annual, also $50, renewed by you on MyComplia. The state needs to see a current certification on file before it can approve the renewal, so the order matters: get recertified first, then file the renewal.
How to renew
Start early. The state takes about 30 days, and there's no grace period on an expired card.
Book your recertification visit
Telehealth again, same as your first one, and it's $75 for returning patients. Don't wait for the last week — between your appointment and a 30-day state review, a card that expires next Friday is already a problem.

Your physician files a new certification
Your new annual certification goes into the state system electronically. Nothing for you to carry or upload — but do give it a day before you file the renewal so it's showing on the state's side.
File the renewal on MyComplia — from your existing certificate
Log in, go to your current certificate, open the menu beside it, and choose the renewal option from the dropdown. Not the "create new application" button.
Work through the prompts and update anything that's changed — address, ID, phone, email. Check that your new certification is showing before you submit. Then pay the $50, or request the hardship waiver again if you qualify.
Approval, then re-download your card
The OMC reviews and emails you the decision. Your renewed digital card is downloaded from MyComplia the same way as the first one — nothing arrives in the mail. Replace the copy on your phone, and the printed one if you keep it in the car.
⚠️ Check your details while you're in there
Renewal is the one time a year you're guaranteed to be in the portal, so use it. An out-of-date address or a dead email address is how patients miss the state's messages entirely — including a request to correct something, which stalls the whole renewal while you're not watching.
If you've moved, you'll likely need fresh proof of West Virginia residency too — a utility bill dated within the last 60 days is the usual one.

Same two payments as your first year, and the state's half can still be $0.

I clicked "Create New Application" by mistake. What now?▾
Don't panic and don't submit it. Back out and go to your existing certificate, then use the menu beside it to start the renewal properly. If you already submitted the wrong one, call us — sorting this out with the OMC is exactly the sort of thing we do, and it's much easier caught early than after a rejection letter.
How early can I renew?▾
Start the process before your card expires — we'd suggest six to eight weeks out. That gives room for your appointment plus the state's roughly 30-day review. Renewing early doesn't cost you anything; renewing late costs you access.
What happens if my card expires before it's renewed?▾
You can't purchase at a dispensary — West Virginia requires a valid card at the point of sale, with no grace period. You don't lose your place in the program, and you're not starting over as a new patient, but you're paused until the renewal is approved. That gap is the reason to start early.
Do I need a new certification, or can I reuse last year's?▾
You need a new one. Certifications run a year, and the state won't approve a renewal without a current one on file. That's why the visit comes first and the portal application second.
Do I have to upload all my documents again?▾
The renewal walks you through your existing information rather than starting blank, so it's quicker than the first time. Update anything that's changed and re-upload where the portal asks — especially if you've moved, since your residency proof will need to be current.
Does my renewed card come in the mail?▾
No — West Virginia is digital only, at renewal the same as at first approval. Log back in to MyComplia after you're approved and download the new card. If you're waiting on an envelope, nothing is coming.
Can I switch to a different doctor at renewal?▾
Yes. You're not tied to whoever certified you last year — any physician registered with the Office of Medical Cannabis can issue your annual certification. If you're coming to us from another practice, book the renewal option and mention it when you talk to us.
I let it lapse a while ago. Am I renewing or starting over?▾
Depends how long, and it's worth a phone call rather than a guess. If your record is still active in the portal you can usually renew; if it's been long enough that the state has closed it out, you may be filing fresh. Call us and we'll check before you pay for the wrong appointment type.
