Becoming a Louisiana medical marijuana patient
Louisiana built its program around pharmacies rather than a state registry. There's no card and nothing to apply for — but there's one choice you make during your visit that matters more than people realise.
No card, no registry, no state fee
Louisiana doesn't maintain a patient registry and doesn't issue medical marijuana cards — physical or digital. Your physician's recommendation goes directly to a licensed therapeutic marijuana pharmacy, and your ID does the rest.
How Louisiana actually works
Most states put a registry between you and the medicine. Louisiana uses its existing pharmacy infrastructure instead. Your recommendation is sent from your physician straight to the therapeutic marijuana pharmacy you nominate, and the pharmacy processes it into their system.
After that, you walk in with a government-issued photo ID. The pharmacist verifies you against the recommendation on file — there's no card to present because there isn't one.

This is the Louisiana-specific thing to get right. Your recommendation is sent to one specific pharmacy that you nominate — so have your choice made before your appointment rather than deciding afterward.
Louisiana has a limited number of licensed therapeutic marijuana pharmacies spread across the state, so for most patients it comes down to which is closest or which has the hours that suit. If you later want to use a different one, that's a conversation with us or the pharmacy rather than something that happens by itself.
The three steps

Book your telehealth visit
Louisiana permits recommendations by telemedicine, so this is a phone or video appointment from home. You'll need to be a Louisiana resident, 18 or over, and able to show it.
Bring to the appointment:
- A valid Louisiana driver's licence or state ID
- Proof of Louisiana residency
- Medical records if you have them — not required, but they make the evaluation quicker
- The name of the pharmacy you want to use
Your physician issues the recommendation and sends it on
Louisiana requires the recommending clinician to hold a medical marijuana registration permit from the state — not every licensed physician has one. Ours do.
If they judge medical cannabis appropriate for your condition, the recommendation is issued and transmitted to the pharmacy you nominated. You can request a copy for your own records, which is worth having.
The pharmacy processes it, then you go in
Processing time varies by location — some pharmacies turn it round in a few hours, others take a couple of days. Calling ahead to check it's landed saves a wasted trip.
When you go in, bring your photo ID. The pharmacist consults with you on products and dosing — which is a real advantage of Louisiana's model, since you're dealing with a pharmacist rather than a retail budtender.

When does my card arrive?▾
It doesn't — Louisiana doesn't issue medical marijuana cards at all, in any form. There's no registry to be listed in and nothing to wait for in the post. Your recommendation at the pharmacy plus your government-issued ID is the whole arrangement.
How do I know my recommendation has arrived?▾
Call the pharmacy and ask. Processing runs from a few hours to a few days depending on how busy they are, and a quick call before you drive over is the simplest way to avoid a wasted trip. If something hasn't landed, call us and we'll chase it.
Can I change to a different pharmacy?▾
Yes, but it isn't automatic — your recommendation went to one specific pharmacy. If you move, or the one you chose isn't working out, get in touch and we'll sort out having it sent elsewhere. Don't just turn up at a different pharmacy expecting to be in their system.
Do I need a specific diagnosis?▾
Louisiana lists qualifying conditions but the list is broad and includes a general provision for debilitating conditions, which gives the physician real latitude. Come prepared to talk about your symptoms and what you've already tried, and let the conversation happen rather than ruling yourself out in advance.
Can my regular doctor recommend it?▾
Only if they hold a medical marijuana registration permit from the state. Louisiana doesn't publish a public list of permitted clinicians, so you'd need to ask yours directly. Many haven't obtained one, which is why most Louisiana patients use a dedicated service.
Can someone else pick up for me?▾
Louisiana's program doesn't provide for caregivers for adult patients the way most states do, so plan on collecting yourself. If getting to a pharmacy is genuinely difficult, ask your pharmacy directly — some offer delivery or other arrangements, and they'll know what's possible in your area.
How long does my recommendation last?▾
Typically a year, with the expiration date shown on the recommendation itself. Louisiana expects an annual re-evaluation, so keep a copy and note the date. How renewal works →
Do you see patients under 18 in Louisiana?▾
No — our Louisiana practice is adults only, 18 and over. Louisiana does allow minor patients with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. If you're seeking care for a child, you'd need a Louisiana clinician who takes minors, and the pharmacy can often point you toward one.
